Richard A. Madsen, Jr. is the founder of the Madsen Law Firm, where he divides his practice between criminal defense matters and civil litigation. He is located in Walnut Creek, California, and he represents clients in Contra Costa County and throughout the state. As an undergraduate, Mr. Madsen attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1984. He, then, enrolled at the McGeorge School of Law, part of the University of the Pacific in Sacramento, and in 1988, he was awarded his Juris Doctor.Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Madsen spent several years as a deputy district attorney with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. While he was there, he handled misdemeanor and felony cases, and he puts that experience to use when anticipating the types of tactics and strategies that prosecutors might employ now that he is representing defendants. Much of Mr. Madsen’s current criminal defense caseload involved charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, and he has been able to obtain positive results for his clients through, among other methods, challenging the admission of sobriety tests as well as the manner in which the initial traffic stop was conducted.A substantial portion of Mr. Madsen’s civil trial experience involves personal injury ,civil rights and wrongful death litigation, in which he represents people who have been harmed by the negligence of other parties in cases involving motor vehicle crashes, premises liability and workplace accidents. He has also handled construction litigation that has included defect claims and contract breaches, representing developers, owners and contractors. Mr. Madsen is admitted to practice in California, before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.
