For an uninterrupted span of 12 years, from 2012 to 2023, Philip A. Byler has consistently received the prestigious honor of being selected for inclusion in the Thomson Reuters New York Metro Super Lawyers.

Mr. Byler’s legal journey commenced in 1976 when he obtained his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. Between 1976 and 1978, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Judge John W. Peck of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Subsequently, in 1978, he embarked on his private legal practice as an associate in the Litigation Department of Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City, where he handled various complex cases encompassing antitrust, securities, First Amendment, and civil rights litigation. He remained with Cravath until 1984, after which he transitioned to Weil Gotshal & Manges in New York City. At Weil Gotshal & Manges, Mr. Byler delved into a diverse array of legal matters, including international trade, accounting fraud, First Amendment, RICO, ERISA, breach of contract, and commercial litigation. In 1990, he decided to establish his own legal practice.

Philip A. Byler currently serves as a Member of The Offices of Philip A. Byler, predominantly practicing in federal court, with additional involvement in state appellate court cases. His extensive legal experience, spanning from 2002 onwards, encompasses both federal and complex state court practice, with a specialization in appeals and trials. Over the course of his career, he has actively litigated cases in New York state court and federal court. He has also presented oral arguments in prominent judicial bodies such as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the Arizona Supreme Court, the New York Court of Appeals, and the New York Appellate Divisions for the First and Second Departments. Furthermore, Mr. Byler is a member of the U.S. Supreme Court Bar. His current legal practice primarily revolves around Title IX law, First Amendment cases, defamation suits, and church property disputes.

Notably, Mr. Byler achieved significant legal victories throughout his career, including his successful argumentation and win in the landmark constitutional case of Immuno A.G. v. Dr. Jan Moor-Jankowski. He also successfully reinstated Title IX discrimination suits for male students in cases like Doe v. Columbia and Doe v. Purdue, earning recognition for his advocacy. Moreover, he secured the reversal of a pseudonym denial in Doe v. MIT.

Mr. Byler is a member of various state and federal bars, including New York, Ohio, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and multiple U.S. District Courts in New York and Ohio. He is also affiliated with several legal associations, such as the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, New York City Bar Association, and the Republican National Lawyers Association. His active involvement in these organizations includes leadership roles and contributions to committees focused on professional discipline, ethics, and legal procedures.

Beyond his legal career, Philip A. Byler is actively engaged in political and community affairs. He has held positions such as Republican Party Committeeman for the Town of Huntington, Long Island, and Suffolk County, New York. His contributions extend to delegate roles at various Republican conventions, including the 2008 Republican National Convention. Furthermore, he is associated with organizations like the Federalist Society, Long Island Ronald Reagan Republican Club, and the Marine Corps League. Mr. Byler has also made significant contributions to youth sports as a baseball coach and manager, and he has been involved in community service and received a Community Service Award from DePauw University in 2008.

Ultimately, Mr. Byler’s most cherished role is that of a father to his two heroic sons. John, a Purdue graduate and U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, has served multiple combat tours, earning accolades such as the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. James, also a Purdue graduate and a U.S. Marines Captain (medically retired), has similarly earned distinctions, including a Purple Heart and an M.B.A. from New York University-Stern School of Business, and currently works as a trader at UBS.
